Ferro silicon is a gray iron alloy composed of iron and silicon. According to the content of Si, Fe, Al, etc,there are different grades. The most widely used are 75% ferrosilicon and 72% ferro silicon.
In the steelmaking industry, 3-5 kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every ton of steel produced.
Ferrosilicon Production Process:
Ferro silicon is made of coke, scrap steel, and quartz (or silica) as raw materials. It is produced when smelted in an electric furnace to about 2000˚C.The ferro silicon can be crushed into pieces of variable size, to meet the customer's demand.
FeSi (FeSi) is used as a source of silicon to reduce metal from its oxides and deoxidize steel and other iron alloys. This can prevent the loss of carbon (C) in molten steel (the so-called hindered heat. In the production of cast iron, ferrosilicon is used to inoculate iron to accelerate graphitization. Ferrosilicon is also important as an additive to cast iron to control the initial content of silicon.
