Silicon metal has high temperature resistance and thermal conductivity, making it one of the preferred kiln furniture materials for tunnel kilns or shuttle kilns, and its electrical conductivity makes it an important electric heating element. Silicon metal is a typical covalently bonded stable compound. Theoretically speaking, silicon metal is all stacked by SiC tetrahedrons, and the difference is only parallel or antiparallel bonding. There are 75 variants of SiC, and all of these structures can be divided into cubic, hexagonal and rhombohedral systems. α-SiC is a high temperature stable type, and β-SiC is a low temperature stable type. β-SiC can be transformed into α-SiC at 2100-2400℃, and β-SiC can be made from a simple mixture of silicon and carbon at a temperature of about 1450℃. Using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction detection technology, polytype analysis and quantitative determination of SiC microscopy can be carried out. In order to distinguish between various structures, a corresponding naming method is required. The naming method is commonly used: the low-temperature type of cubic silicon metal is called β-SiC, and the other hexagonal and rhombic unit cell structures are all called α-SiC. This naming method is not consistent with phase conventions and mineralogical naming, but because of its convenience, it is quite popular.
